Hugs are Good for You
Hugs are good for you and the science is there to prove it!
We hug people for many reasons, when we are happy, sad, pleased to see them or trying to comfort them. Hugging is comforting and makes people feel good.
Hormones are released in to the body after a hug which provide a ‘happy feeling’ and are scientifically proven to improve mental and physical health by lowering the level of cortisone, a stress hormone, in the body.
Hugs are Healthy
Giving someone a hug lowers the level of the stress hormone, cortisol. This makes the person who is being hugged feel more relaxed. Interestingly, it can also do the same for the person who is giving the hug.
A reduction in stress from a hug can help you to be healthy. Scientific studies have shown that people who hug are less likely to be sick and recover from sickness far quicker than those who have very little support network of family and friends and therefore receive less hugs.
Hugging can also have benefits for your heart. Studies carried out have shown that heart rate and blood pressure are reduced after a hug from a partner, family member or friend.
Happy Hormones
A chemical called Oxytin has been associated with happiness. Our levels of Oxytin rise when we hug or touch someone. The production of this hormone can reduce blood pressure and lower the production of the stress hormone Norephinephrine.
The positive benefits of this hormone can be found when hugging a partner. The same benefits have been proven for a child hugging a favourite cuddly toy.
Science has also proven that hugging a person or teddy bear can help reduce anxiety and low self esteem.
Hugging communicates affection, comfort and caring. So if you want to feel physically and mentally connected then you know what you have to do!
