It’s been a hard few months for everyone, especially children who have had to make some huge sacrifices to protect the elderly and vulnerable people within our society. Now, with summer around the corner, it feels even more important to create some really special activities and celebrations for our little ones.
So, we thought we would compile a bit of a list of ideas of some fun garden activities for kids. Especially as we are now able to meet up to two households in the garden.
- Teddy Bears Picnic
An ‘oldie’ but a ‘goodie’ ALL children love a Teddy Bears Picnic. You can make it simple, a few Bears and a few snacks or you can go all out…blankets, pillows, a full picnic tea. We think this works really well for a children’s birthday party with gifts and cake and all those goodies that make for a really great day.
2. Arty party
Getting crafty outdoors is a great way to keep children entertained. Plus, painting, chalk, gluing and sticking is always better outdoors because it saves your carpets! Task the little ones with something to draw – their favourite Teddy maybe, and let their imaginations run wild.
3. Den building and picnic
Den’s don’t have to be complicated, a simple large white sheet pinned up between trees or washing lines does the job. Fill the bottom with blankets and cushions, add teddy, bunny and all the favourite soft toys and you have a lovely area for little ones to play, hide and relax. Snacks or tea outside in the den is always a popular option.
4. We’re going on a bear hunt
Michael Rosen’s famous book is a favourite at Bears4u. Read our blog on our favourite teddy bear stories here. Once a popular one with our children, we now delight in seeing our grandchildren enjoy it. This story makes the perfect backdrop for a bear hunt in the garden. Hide a Teddy Bear in a ‘cave’ then get hunting, making sure to go through all the swishy grass and sploshy mud!
5. Sports day
Children love to run around outside, racing each other and being competitive. A sports day is a great way of getting them active whilst having fun. Set up ‘stations’ for different activities and award prizes for everyone! Enjoy watching the excitement and pink cheeks of happy children. Teddy races are always a big hit too! Mark out the spaces, get a dice to throw for the moves and its ready, teddy go!
6. Teddy talent show
Teddies are very talented creatures don’t you know? They can sing, dance and tell jokes with the wonderful imagination of a child. It’s easy enough to knock together a quick stage out of boxes or even have the patio as the stage while the audience sits on the grass. Music on your phone, and don’t forget the important job of judges, and you are on to a winner.
Summer is a magical time for children, the carefree and warm days we all remember from our own childhood. Getting outside is great for not only their physical health but their mental health too. In fact, having fun in the garden is great for the whole family.
Celebrations may look a little different this year but that doesn’t mean they can’t still be special. Let’s get outside, let’s be inventive and let’s have fun.
