Giving a gift to someone is something that is practiced worldwide and has been done so throughout time for many thousands of years. It is a way of expressing our feelings. Whether it is to show love, congratulate someone on the birth of their baby or on passing an exam, to wish them a happy birthday or just to say thank you for being a friend … it is something that we all love to do and it helps us to fell a connection with the person we are gifting.
The History of Giving a Gift
The giving of gifts can be traced back to pre historic times when tribe leaders bestowed gifts on valued members of their tribe. Animal teeth, horns and rocks were often given as gifts. This is where the saying that a child will get ‘rocks and sticks’ for Christmas if they don’t behave originates from.
As things progressed and tools were developed cavemen were able to make necklaces from the same things to give as gifts.
During Egyptian times gifts were bestowed on Pharaohs who stored them in pyramids for their after life. Later on the Romans gave each other tokens of luck as a present. This tradition is still practiced today.
In Medieval times personal gifts such as sheep, goats and cows were given to the husband by the family of the daughter whom he was marrying. Coins were often given as well. In some cultures today these dowries are still practiced.
Present day gift giving is a huge part of life. Gifts are given for all occasions and celebrations. The practice provide us with the opportunity to express our feelings without actually having to say anything.
