Winnie the Pooh
When you think of famous bears, of course you think of Winnie the Pooh! Pooh was created by A. A. Milne, named after a teddy bear owner by his son Christopher Robin Milne. Many of Christopher Robin’s other toys featured in the tales told by his father, but the loveable, honey eating Pooh really steals the show. A classic character who has had lasting fame throughout the decades, Winnie the Pooh has starred in television shows and Disney films.
If you’d like your very own Pooh toy just like Christopher Robin, treat yourself or someone you love to one of our snuggly and soft Winnie the Pooh teddies.
Hailing from deepest, darkest Peru, Paddington Bear was created when author Michael Bond spotted a lone teddy bear on a shelf in a toy shop near Paddington Station on Christmas Eve, 1956. Since then, duffle coat wearing and marmalade loving fella has appeared in more than 20 books, as well as multiple film and television adaptations AND a stage play. He is such a nationwide favourite that when the two sides of the Channel Tunnel were linked in 1994, a Paddington Bear soft toy was the first item chosen by the British to send to France. Although he’s not technically a bear, how could we miss Peter Rabbit – especially with his latest film about to hit the big screen! The mischievous but much loved bunny is one of Beatrix Potter’s most famous creations. Peter is always drawn in his distinctive jacket and shoes, and lives in a rabbit hole with his mother and sister Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail. Bears4u are based in Potter’s hometown of Windermere, so it’s needless to say we have a special place in our hearts for the cheeky chap.
“I’m smarter than the average bear!” proclaims cartoon icon Yogi Bear. Created by Hanna-Barbera animation studio for the Huckleberry Hound Show in 1958, Yogi was so popular that he was given his very own show a few years later in 1961. The Yogi Bear Show was set in Jellystone Park – a fictional version of the famous Yellowstone National Park in the USA. Yogi’s cartoon capers centered on him and his sidekick Boo Boo’s antics – namely stealing ‘pic-a-nic’ baskets and trying to avoid the wrath of Park Ranger Smith.
Rupert the Bear
We couldn’t write this list without including arguably the world’s best-dressed fictional bear – Rupert. Rupert was created for the Daily Express as a comic strip in 1920, and is still a daily feature in the newspaper. Always looking chic in his statement red jumper and yellow checked trousers, Rupert lives in idyllic fictional village Nutwood and goes on magical adventures with his best friend Bill Badger. Needless to say, he’s always looking stylish throughout all his enchanting escapades!
An iconic part of The Jungle Book, Baloo was likely named after the word “bahlu”, the Hindi word for bear. Described by Rudyard Kipling as the “sleepy brown bear”, Baloo is the wise cracking moral compass of the story who taught man-cub Mowgli right from wrong. Fun fact – Disney’s version of Baloo was a strong inspiration for Little John in the studio’s version of Robin Hood – and was even voiced by the same actor, Phil Harris!
First appearing on The Muppet Show as a standup comic, Fozzie is Kermit the Frog’s best friend and constant companion. Always seen in his trademark brown pork pie hat and polka dot scarf, Fozzie Bear is a favourite of Muppets fans and known for his catchphrase “wocka wocka!”. Something you might not know about this orange bear is that he was named after Franz ‘Foz’ Fazakas, a puppeteer who created hundreds of special effects for Muppet productions.
