Baby showers in the UK are a relatively new idea that spread over from the US. However, giving gifts to expectant parents was a very popular thing to do long before the Baby Shower idea came along.
The arrival of a little one has always been a source celebration but these celebrations were very different from what we know today. Ancient Greeks and Egyptians offered gifts and good wishes to their gods and goddesses as a way of welcoming the baby.
In the Middle Ages, the baby’s baptism allowed family and friends to give gifts to the new parents. Often the gifts to have religious significance, and were given by Godparents.
Baby Showers as we know them, first started to appear in Victorian times. Pregnancy and childbirth weren’t discussed publicly, so these celebrations were always after the baby was born. They consisted of tea parties that included games and gifts for the new mother. As their popularity increased over the following decades, and they were known as “stork parties”.
Following the world wars baby showers became widespread, particularly in the US. They gave family and friends an opportunity to help parents with essential goods for the baby after the hardship of 2 world wars.
As time has gone on the tradition has evolved and become an integral part of every new parent experience. These days men are also invited and the parties are sometimes referred to as ‘Jack and Jill’ Showers. Cake is shared and games are played but one thing that hasn’t changed over the time is the lavish gifts that are bestowed on the parents and baby.
Today there seems to be so many gifts and gadgets that a baby ‘needs’. Bottle warmers, vibrating mattresses, sleep machines, bottle slings .. the list is endless and the choice of baby gifts is huge! But one gift that is still as popular as it has always been since it first made an appearance all those years ago is the good old teddy bear.
Teddy Bears have always been associated with babies and children. Traditionally a pink teddy for a baby girl and a blue teddy bear for a baby boy. Children will often carry their best friend around for many years and keep them in to their adulthood.
Like most things teddy bears have changed throughout the decades and these days there are so many to choose from. Some of the most popular brands include Gund, Suki, Moulin Roty, Steiff and many more.
One of the more recent popular gifts is the teddy comforter. This is a little blanket with a teddy head or body. These are also now available in a variety of other animals including rabbits, sheep and donkeys to name a few.
Bears4u have a lovely range of baby comforters that make lovely gifts for a baby shower. Many of them can be personalised with a message.
